The Place de la Comédie (often just referred to as 'The Comédie' by English speakers) is the main square in the centre of Montpellier and is a short walk uphill from the station.
There is regular live music and performances and a living statue that sometimes appears. The tram lines 1 & 2 (Blue and Orange) both pass through the Place de la Comédie itself and it marks the start of the large pedestrian shopping centre.
The Comédie has lots of useful landmarks for tourists or residents, starting on the Eastern side:
- Opéra Comédie - An opera house originally built in 1755 but rebuilt in 1888 after fire damage. It includes a Grand Foyer with 8 beautiful frescoes. Visit the Opéra Comédie website for details of shows.
- Monoprix - A fairly large supermarket that's easy to miss as only a small part of it is visible from the Place.
- Gaumont Comédie - One of two Gaumont Cinemas in Montpellier. This cinema has 8 screens and you may wish to see the Gaumont Comédie Cinema Timetable.
- Office de Tourisme de Montpellier - The main Tourist Information Office in Montpellier
There are also several cafes and restaurants at the Place.
